Currently operates 19 MCD F-15C Eagle’s and 2 MCD F-15D Eagle’s.
The 493rd Fighter Squadron is a combat-ready F-15 Eagle squadron capable of executing air superiority and air defense missions in support of United States Air Forces in Europe, United States European Command, and NATO operations. It employs air-to-air weapons and electronic identification systems. The squadron has the ability to rapidly generate, deploy, and sustain operations to execute wartime and peacetime tasking’s in any theatre of operations in the world.
The Squadron has been based at RAF Lakenheath since 11th January 1960 when it used the F-100 Super Sabre.
On 27th January 1991, MCD F-15C Eagle 84-0027 was on a sortie during The Gulf War, as "OPEC 02", flown by Capt. Benjamin Dean Powell when it engaged and destroyed a MiG 23 & Mirage F-1 of the Iraqi Air Force.
